Year 2 Food Science and Technology
Conversations with people in CAPT make my uni life so much better! Oftentimes when I go to the pantry, I’ll bump into friendly faces - my one job to fill water would turn into a full yap session 😂 I love how open and willing people are to try new things, and it’s a very nurturing place to be in to learn from one another. As my OGL once told me, “Never try, never know”. I also enjoy Community Engagement in CAPT. My fruitful time in Social Innovation Wing as a Y1 made me realise how much I loved the SI community and what we do. It was mind-blowing to me how simple adjustments to approaches using innovation could tackle long-standing, unfulfilled social issues within our community. It was a worthwhile experience exploring various communities and experiencing the joy in meaningfully giving back to our community.
Year 2 Computer Science
Living in CAPT has been a journey full of fun, friendship, and endless opportunities. I've discovered unique sports like squash in a relaxed, non-competitive setting and enjoyed playing with friends in the exciting Inter-Neighbourhood Games — my house, Dragon, has reigned champions for the past 3 years! Beyond sports, CAPT connects you with diverse communities. I've engaged with religious groups and LGBT organizations during the Community Engagement Festival, visited a floating fish farm and non-profit groups like Our Singapore Reefs, and participated in a mentoring program with foster youths. Every day offers a chance to grow, learn, and create lasting memories.
Year 2 Psychology
As an international student who came to Singapore in 2018, I’ve stayed in various hostels, but CAPT is where I truly found a second home. It’s a place of growth, friendships, and meaningful conversations. What I love most is CAPT’s vibrant student life and inclusive culture. Coming in, I was nervous, but casual lounge check-ins from seniors and deep talks with suitemates quickly made me feel at home. This inclusivity is also reflected by the unique courses offered in CAPT. Courses that I have taken include ‘Pathways to Adulthood’, ‘Mental Wellness’, and ‘Community Building—Insight from the Balkans’. I was so surprised when I found out these are the topics deeply cared for in CAPT as they reflect the complexity and challenges of this modern era. My experiences of volunteering under Kindle+ to engage with fostered youth and CAPT in Silence to engage with the Deaf community offered me insights into the communities and it was definitely more than a one-way relationship as I benefited and learned so much from the communities.
Year 2 Law
CAPT has been the anchor in my University life, providing me with a space of consistency and security amidst a constantly-changing and fast-evolving world. As a Law student, our campus itself is located about a thirty- to forty-minute drive from main campus. As such, Law students often feel isolated from the main NUS community. However, being in CAPT has provided me with an invaluable support group of friends – who treat each other as, dare I say, family. Knowing that, at the end of a tiring day, I would come back to warm smiles awaiting, eager housemates wanting nothing more than an excuse to grab supper together, and deep 1-am conversations, my University life as a CAPTain has been nothing less than invaluably fulfilling.
Year 4 Philosophy, Politics, Economics
There’s so many things I loved about the CAPT experience: from the ample community engagement opportunities to the vibrant student life offered in our many sports, clubs and societies. However, the thing I appreciate most is the wonderful community of CAPTains, staff and fellows! Through living and learning together, we’ve truly created a home away from home where we can all feel comfortable to be ourselves. It’s not uncommon to see fellows and students eating together in the DH, or students and staff chatting in the mornings. It’s also great to see people discover their identity and really connect with one another in their time here — i’ve made many of my closest friends from CAPT and they’ve had a lasting impact on my life :)
Year 1 Mechanical Engineering
I first heard about CAPT from my brother and friends who stayed here, and they would always have stories about how amazing and close-knitted the community here was. That made me really keen on joining CAPT, and now that I'm in my second semester, I can honestly say that CAPT has in fact exceeded my expectations. I've been able to make friends with people from diverse backgrounds, and I could even say these friends are my biggest support system in school! CAPT has also given me incredible opportunities to grow and contribute to the community around, such as being part of Kindle+, where we engage with foster youths, and CAPTsupport, which promotes mental wellness and peer support among CAPTains. Also, there is always something fun to look forward to, be it house events, interest groups like sports and music, or simply spending time with my friends, there's never a dull moment. After long days of school, I always look forward to coming back to CAPT. For me, CAPT is more than just a place to stay, it's where I've forged friendships, grown, and made memories I'll always treasure. I'm in the midst of crafting my own story to share to others about CAPT (:
Year 1 Social Work and Psychology
When I entered CAPT, I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly community. Staying in CAPT has made my uni life much more fulfilling as I gained so many close friends and a stable support system. CAPT gave me a safe platform where I felt comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things. Being a part of the house committee made me more involved in student life, where I was able to organise events to allow people in my house bond more! It's heartening that after a long day of lessons, I can look forward to spending time with my friends and going for yap or supper sessions. Being in CAPT definitely made my uni life much more fulfilling!
Year 1 Business
One aspect of CAPT that unexpectedly enhanced my university life was the community engagement (CE). I say unexpectedly because I never anticipated that weekly interactions with the elderly would become such a highlight—something I look forward to every week. For example, during the recent ACE Elderly trip to Jurong Lake Garden, I realized that as time passes, we truly begin to uncover and CAPTure the essence of life. As Auntie Veron, an elderly participant, shared with me, “There is no fixed way to live life, so just chase your dreams.” It is these moments of shared wisdom that make the sessions even more meaningful. I believe that is what makes CAPT truly CAPTivating—it reveals a side of us that is often hidden, a desire to serve the community.
